This afternoon we went shopping at what is quickly becoming our mall of choice, the Marquee Mall in Angeles City. There are four shopping malls within easy reach of Apalit – SM Pampanga and Robinsons Starmills in San Fernando and SM Clark and Marquee Mall in Angeles (actually there are other, smaller malls, but these are the big ones). Marquee Mall is one of the newest, opening in September 2009. It’s part of the Ayala chain of malls, and we like it because it has a more interesting mix of shops than the other malls we’ve visited locally. (In other words, it’s a little bit posher.)
One of the main reasons for going to the mall today was to get Sophia and Nathaniel’s eyes checked out. They had both had eye tests previously, but that was some time ago. To cut a long story short, both of them needed glasses to correct near-sightedness and astygmatism. (Just like her father, Sophia is worse in one eye than the other.) An hour of shopping later, the new glasses were ready.
The good news is that specs are much cheaper in the Philippines than in the UK and they’re designer frames – Sophia’s are Baby Phat and Nat’s Tommy Hilfiger – total cost around GBP 100.
So now we’re a family of speccy four eyes, as we used to say at primary school. But at least we give the impression (if not the reality) of being intelligent and studious. As the optician remarked: ‘New Year, new glasses’. And you can’t really argue with that.
